Khi bạn học ngày càng nhiều về tiếng Anh, bạn có thể cảm thấy bối rối khi nhìn thấy những cụm từ kỳ quặc không có ý nghĩa.

Những cụm từ này được gọi là "thành ngữ" - Idiom. Thành ngữ là những cụm từ (nhóm từ) có nghĩa ẩn mà khi đọc theo nghĩa đen của từ đó không rõ ràng. Chúng có vẻ khó hiểu hoặc ngẫu nhiên đối với bạn, nhưng hầu hết các thành ngữ đã ra đời cách đây hàng trăm năm và dần trở thành một phần của lời nói tiếng Anh hàng ngày.
Tại sao lại học và sử dụng idioms? Chà, nếu bạn muốn trở nên thành thạo tiếng Anh nhất có thể, bạn cần phải biết chúng. Sách giáo khoa không phải lúc nào cũng dạy bạn về chúng, nhưng thỉnh thoảng đưa một idiom vào sẽ khiến các cuộc hội thoại của bạn tự nhiên hơn. .
1) grin and bear it (C2): to accept something bad without complaining:
chấp nhận một điều gì đó mà không phàn nànHow are you doing?
The living condition here is barely tolerable, but I’ll just have to grin and bear it.
2) put a damper/dampener on sth: stop an occasion from being enjoyable

3) ring a bell (C2): to sound familiar
(very commonly used with name)Do you know Alice, the girl in the red dress over there?

4) a figment of one’s imagination: something that seems real but is not
Regina, what happened between you and Justin?
He doesn’t love me at all. I guess it’s just a figment of my imagination.
5) to spread yourself too thin: to try to do too many things at the same time, so that you cannot give enough time or attention to any of them

8) talk sth through: to discuss all the details of something, often before making a decision

9) up in the air: If a matter is up in the air, it is uncertain, often because other matters have to be decided first

10) to beat a dead horse: to waste effort on something when there is no chance of succeeding
làm việc vô nghĩaThere’s no point in wasting your time with that project. Don’t beat a dead horse.
